    I was driving to the Portland, Oregon, airport to pick up some business colleagues when he was running for president in 2000. He had just arrived in Portland, and traffic got held up for a LONG time while his motorcade passed. I rolled down my window and when his limo passed, I gave him the one-finger salute. :) Of course, I'll never know whether he saw it. Based on this video, though, if he did he probably just thought I was being friendly!

      Back in my ancient college days, Bush the Elder came to Portland for some gawdawful thing or other. A group of enterprising young students, part of the "Guerrilla Theater Of the Absurd", a subset dubbed for that event as the "Reverse Peristalsis Painters" decided to go make a political statement about what they thought of Bush the Elected's policies and politics.
      They consumed mashed potatoes, food colored, and went and vomitted red, white and green in front of the President.
      Apparently something happens to blue food coloring when it hits stomach acid.

        was working security at the Portland hotel W stayed at when he made that visit to town. He had to help provide security for Bush & co. while they were in the hotel. Had to shake the asshole's hand and escort him to his room. He said it was W's birthday and someone had given him a birthday cake. My son had a master key, so he went in Bush's room when the dude was out schmoozing and had a piece of his cake. :-)
        He also told me a funny story about how a big Bush banner got stolen out of the hotel and how pissed Bush's people--especially Karen Hughes, who pitched a fit--were about it. He thought it was pretty funny.

      i think that if people want to start doing character assassination it is just going to get ugly for Kerry as well as Bush.
      Like it or not the whole Mary Cheney thing has finally died and harping on this will raise that whole "Kerry is a mean spirited man" argument back up.
      I just think everyone needs to take a deep breath. That's all. Making a big deal out of this is counter productive and petty. There are serious things happening in the world right now. This, however, is not one of them. Neither is the Mary Cheney thing. But the media likes that sort of crap and it always backfires.

        I agree that Kerry/Edwards and basically everyone should stay on message. I think it would be good to send it widely in email. Hard-core repubs will think "What a lovable scamp". Hard-core dems will think "What a total asshole". The people in the middle will probably think "That's pretty childish." They'll hear Kerry talking about issues on TV, and then check their email and wonder whether Bush really has the maturity and seriousness to protect national security. I bet Bush is a lovable scamp. I bet he'd be a great cruise director. He just picked the wrong path in life.

        Here in Wingnutville, the Virginian-Pilot (which supports Kerry) has guestbooks where people can post who they're voting for and why. Many of the Bush supporters who post there write that they are voting for him because he has "Godly morals", that he has "Christian values" or that he is a "man of God". Two of my Christian family members believe he has been chosen by God to be president.
        I think this video blows all that "Christian values" thinking out of the water, and I've posted it on the guestbook.

        Back in '80 Barry Commoner produced a radio spot that led off with the word "Bullshit!" His reasoning was that it was an electoral ad, and therefore if he bought the time the station had to run it uncensored.
        There was a great deal of controversy at the time. I'm not sure how widely it eventually aired.
        At any rate, if Commoner's theory applies stations would have to run the ad. If it doesn't and someone wanted to run this in an ad, all they'd have to do would be to pixellate out the middle finger. It would be obvious what was behind the pixellation.
        Having said that, I have to agree with several people in this thread that this image has no place in an ad, at least not on E minus six (and probably not at all). We should be focusing on three things right now: Iraq, Iraq, and Iraq. Oh yeah, and GOTV.

        I'm just saying use this as a powerful visual symbol of what is REALLY happening. Bush's policies display a rampant lack of concern for real people. You'd highlight that in voiceover and visuals, and use this footage of him as a metaphor for that. So I would ask those who are familiar with Evangelicals how something like this might affect them? Is is absolutely forbidden for Evangelicals to swear or give someone the finger, or has this behavior grown acceptable even to the majority of modern Evangelicals?

Sent this on to a colleague who really seems to feel that Bush is indeed the "chosen one". His reply. "Isn't it refreshing to have a President with a sense of humor?" Then more ramblings about Kerry and evil.

I'd suggest coupling it with this video from The Smoking Gun showing shrub at a wedding in 1992, years after finding Jesus and jumping on "the wagon." What will pass for good natured good 'ol boy ribbing to many will be heard by evangelicals as chiding his friends who are not getting drunk.
