I read new The Nation article by Nicholas Von Hoffman considering Air America vs. Democracy Radio and which would survive and/or have the most impact. He spoke with some different talk-radio "experts" and Execs from both companies. It seemed his opinion was that Democracy Radio as a syndication would be more successful than Air America as a network. He had some good points surrounding the ability to get programming into more markets and reach more listeners. While these points are valid, he fails to address the impact that satellite radio services like, XM and Sirius will have on the future of radio.
It occurs to me that as these services grow in subscribers, networks like Air America should be in a prime position to gain access to even more listeners and the market reach is incalculable.
We should not be dismissive of the potential of "pay radio", and those networks involved. I can remeber when folks thought that no one would ever pay to watch television and certainly no one would watch a 24 hour news network.
Bottomline, whomever comes out the winner, it is encouraging to hear voices from the left finding an audience and reminding us all that we are not alone.
Good Luck to both.
