Republican voters in parts of Lancaster County are getting a letter from President George W. Bush this weekend, urging them to vote for "my friend," Arlen Specter.
The impetus for the letter actually arose from the Jim Clymer campaign.
Specter's team is concerned that Clymer, the Constitution Party's U.S. Senate nominee, has been attaching himself to Bush in the campaign's endgame.
Here's the deal: Arlen's in a squeeze. He's got Jim Clymer on his right, the only pro-lifer in the race, already pulling high single digits and with a
powerful final ad on the air.
On the left, Joe Hoeffel is damning Specter with his own words, pointedly making the case to PA Dems and Moderates of how tied Specter is to Bush.
Specter knows that if Clymer pulls in the double digits, as past Constitution Party candidates have in this state when running against two self-proclaimed pro-choice candidates (12-14% against Tom Ridge in the 90s), then this race is won with 46-47% of the vote, and John Kerry's coattails and straight-ticket voting can provide that for Hoeffel.
And that's where the race is right now.
