If you live in Santa Ana, Newport Beach, Irvine, Tustin and a few other areas of Orange County, the special election to replace U.S. House of Representatives member Christopher Cox (recently appointed by Bush to head the SEC) is this Tuesday, October 4.
Republican candidates include the very conservative John Campbell of Irvine and the more moderate (socially) Marilyn Brewer of Newport Beach. The very kooky anti-immigrant "Minuteman Project" founder Jim Gilchrist is also running for the seat. The district is 2:1 Republican to Democrat, and the very unlikely to be elected Democrats include UCI professor John Graham and attorney Steve Young. If none of the candidates receive over 50% of the vote, there will be a run-off in December to determine the winner. From a realistic perspective, the best choice in this election for Democrats might just be to vote for Brewer on Tuesday (in order to avoid a run-off with the much more conservative Campbell).
