Hey Kossacks. I'm manning the complaint line in southern Florida for ACT and in the last two hours we have been receiving complaints from residents in Broward, Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale that they have received calls regarding a precinct change for their voting tomorrow. We need you to find all the news stations in our region in time for the 11:00 news. Please make clear that you only want them to notify Floridians that should they receive a call telling them that their polling place has changed that they should disregard it. Florida Kossacks should report any and all shenanigans they have bourne witness to as well. Here is the full complaint report from Voter Protect.

I'll start you off: WPTV NBC West Palm Beach News Room (561-653-5700.)

WPEC CBS Channel 12: 561-848-NEWS.

It would be awesome if you wouldn't mind notifying Air America as well. They can spread word to more Floridians to stop this madness. And please, reccomend the hell out of this diary, we need to crush them.

Back to the war room go I. Someone please take the lead here. We got them on the ropes. It's our time. GOTV, ya'll GOTV.

From the comments: She just got a call from a woman who told her that her polling place had been changed. The woman gave her new polling place info, and my friend's mother challenged her, because she knew the new location wasn't in her district. When she asked to speak to the woman's supervisor, the woman hung up. My friend's mother then called the Kerry campaign office. They said they had gotten at least 50 calls from elderly voters in the last few hours complaining about the same thing.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Anyone know a quick way to figure out where the calls are coming from?  *69 work?

Maybe have one of the million lawyers down there for the election go for an emergency court order to allow police to look at phone records of those receiving the crank calls to determine the calls' origins?  Would be glorious to nail Jeb and his friends red handed...

    •  Second this....get a lawyer from KEO4 or the DNC.. (none)
....on this pronto. What they are doing is illegal as everyone here realizes.
      •  KE04 certainly knows (none)

Legal has been on this since 4:30.  No idea why this hasn't gotten press.  This is a problem throughout Florida, and it started many hours ago.
        •  Query (none)
Since you seem to be in the know, what's the word on tracking down the perpetrators on this?  Has anyone identified them yet?  (And, since legal's working on it, I take it they have a possible target for a TRO?)  Something that miht be a tip-off is whether they've called people who've already voted.  If not, we can narrow the number of candidates down considerably.  Anyway, I'm looking forward to finding out who it is and having them busted hard.
          •  I'll let KE04 release info as appropriate... (none)

I think that info is better left for legal to disclose as they see fit.

Will only tell you that I was working one of the big FL offices when the complaints started pouring in.  To say voters were ticked off is a vast understatement.  I hope that there's still time for this thing to backfire.

            •  I suspect that this is one of those things (none)
that will move like wildfire through the next few hours.  If they were mad before, they'll be livid tomorrow.  Turnout will move up, and people will be willing to wait longer to vote.  This is the proverbial straw that breaks the camel's back.
    •  Some numbers show (none)
I've heard people have called back the numbers that showed up on Caller ID, seems Jacksonville Fl was the source of some of the calls. The person who answered claimed they were with some non-partisan group and that no one would have told people that, blah blah. Right.

My best friend's mother just called from Palm Beach County, Florida. She is an election monitor for the Kerry campaign tomorrow--she's 70 years old and really, really pissed off.

She just got a call from a woman with "a thick Ebonics accent" who told her that her polling place had been changed. The woman gave her new polling place info, and my friend's mother challenged her, because she knew the new location wasn't in her district. When she asked to speak to the woman's supervisor, the woman hung up.

Every person I got through to said almost verbatim:

    Kick ass, Kossacks.

    •  There Must Be Corroboration (4.00)
Kudos for getting the message out!  We have to be able to corroborate this misinformation.  Does anyone know if the news stations will be in contact with any of those who've received those false 'change in your precinct' calls?  If not, maybe someone can get the word out to the relators of this crime that they need to call the news stations too.

    •  Got A Response! (none)
Watching the Orlando NBC affiliate WESH and they reported that viewers in Lake County should ignore phone calls stating that precincts have changed location.  This has spread far north of South Florida in a very Republican county near Orlando.  We must stay on top of this!!!
      •  I saw that. (none)
I was turning on the TV and flipping through channels, when I realized TDS was on and in my bumbling anticipation, I end up somehow seeing WESH (Channel 2 here at UCF) talking about how they must not regard phone calls notifying them of a change of location, and that if the EC wanted to change a polling location, it is far too late to do that now...

I felt all warm... maybe it was the nice few shots of Cuervo I had just downed, but yeah, this is awesome, how fast and far this gets out.

I cannot even imagine doing something like this to mislead and disenfranchise voters. Yet it's obviously shockingly widespread among Republicans. Are these calls coming from one location or from many? might they be abusing online Demo GOTV call lists to spread lies? Do they ever even stop to think how dirty and pathetic and desperate it makes the Republican Party look?
    •  Ohio is shocking too (none)
When you put what is happening in Florida together with what the Republicans are doing in Ohio it is really shocking. Their efforts are going to do tremendous damage to the idea of free and fair elections in the U.S. There is a lot more at stake than this one election. We must bury them!

  •  Preempt: standing in the wrong line? (4.00)
I just had a bad idea - is there any way to make sure that people who show up and wait in line for hours to vote are standing in line AT THE RIGHT PRECINCT?

Because it'd suck to spend four hours in line, and then be told, "Sorry, you need to go to another precinct (and stand in line for another four hours there)."

And it'd suck even MORE to spend four hours in line at the end of the day, so that you're in line by closing time (and thus permitted to vote after closing)... AND THEN FIND OUT YOU'RE AT THE WRONG POLLING PLACE! (and be unable to go to another one, because it's closed)

I have no idea how likely this is, but it seems like it could happen, and it would suck. Any thoughts?

    •  I suspect our GOTV operation (none)
(ACT & KE '04) are making the relevant calls right now to fix some of this.
    •  Don't think it will happen tomorrow... (none)
Tomorrow the only place you can vote will be your precinct.  In Palm Beach Co we have over 900 locations for tomorrow's voting.

Not saying there won't be lines, but nothing like what we've seen for the last 2 weeks....don't think so, anyway...could be wrong, tho.

What would be ideal is to have someone with a laptop who can help people by looking up their precinct on www.mypollingplace.com.

      Good question, Christopher.

    •  Yes .. (none)
At every poll, you could have people with laptops with the voting registrations downloaded on them.

They could set up a folding table the appropriate number of feet from the polls. They can put up a sign that lets Dem voters know that they can check their registration for them on their laptop to make sure they are at the right voting station.

A post on the MyDD blog from someone in Denver, CO to whom the exact same thing is happening....looks like a coordinated plan people.  This won't stop our people, just piss us off even more and get them out to vote!  I am so glad the GOP has run out of pro-Bush callers to call, so they are trying to mess up pro-Kerry people, but they'll never get to them all!  And the ones they do get will be smart enough to realize it...

This is not surprising.  I have no doubt that the GOP is completely in the pocket of crooks who would stoop this low.  These people play dirty.
    •  Unfortunately, it will work. (none)
People who leave work with just enough time to get to the polls won't have time to get to their real polling place.

Regardless of the outcome of this election, this should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

How sad to think the GOP has to resort to denying people the vote in order to win.

Out of fairness, I must ask... is there any evidence that the Dems have done this sort of thing?  I've never seen any.

    •  Where is this coming from? (none)
It seems to be happening all over, or at least in Florida and Colorado (and I'll bet Ohio and some of the other swing states). If these calls are being made from out of state I say trace them back to the perpetrators and bring them up on FEDERAL wire fraud charges. Seems like there should be some combination of (a) conspiring to deprive someone of their civil rights (i.e., the right to vote), and (b) using a telephone circuit that crosses state lines to do it.

  •  It's happening in Wisconsin TOO!!!! (none)
There was a report on the news tonight about people receiving calls about precinct changes in Wisconsin.  The reporter told viewers to check with their original precinct first.  We need to stay on the phones, email, and make sure this doesn't work nationwide.  Since it made the news, someone must have reported it.  We need to get it on the news tomorrow too.

  •  Catching them (none)
For an operation of this size, it should not be that hard to get cooperation for the big phone services, and track these usage patterns. I would guess it would have to be an offshore operation, given that you probably could not find enough republican criminals to man all these phones.
KE04 must get lawyers involved in tracking this down and demand FBI intervention.

up the page, legal's been on it since 4:30 today.  I just wish I knew more, but they've got to play this very careful.

I suspect, though, that word of this is moving like wildfire right now.  By tomorrow, this may be the major story, and it will turn out voters in droves.  If Rove wanted to insure a Bush loss, he just did it.

  •  asdf (none)
I saw reports of this happening in Minnesota too.  I sent the thread to my daughter, who goes to the U of M, but lives off campus.  Over the weekend, we looked up her polling place online so she knew where to go.

Today she got a call from someone who said they were from Americans Coming Together and that the polling place was at the Coffman student union.  It would be nice if that were the case, but that's not what the official list says for her address.

    •  asdf (none)
And to add, it really pissed my daughter off that a campaign would do something like this.

Always worthwhile to get the word out.
      •  asdf (none)
Yes, and she suspected it was a scam right away.  Unfortunately, being the starving students that they are, they don't have caller ID.
        •  Caller ID & *69 Won't Help... (none)
if the call is from out-of-state.  People who receive these calls need to call their local phone company, explain what happened, and ask for a list of the last calls to their line.  Then forward the information to KE04 legal, I would think.

Keep in mind that *69 service is not free--it costs something like 50 cent (probably varies).  But if you tell your phone company that someone is violating state or federal law, they are usually responsive.  KE04 and other groups need to be finding victims and filing paperwork to get call records and connect the dots.

          •  I would guess. . . (none)
given the enormity of the violations this evening, that this has been found out through the phone company by KE'04.  However, to be on the safe side, you might want your daughter to call the phone company to get the information as h0db suggests.

Americans Coming Together does not instruct you to tell anyone where there voting location is. They tell you to give out the 866-OUR-VOTE number for them to call for that info themselves.

  •  Nevada maybe getting fraud calls also (none)
My Mother called me to say she has been hearing reports from fellow canvassers who say some one has been calling voters and offering to let them vote over the phone....... stupid trick (the person doing it is also a stupid trick)Im disgusted with my countrymen but unfortunately not surprised
  •  Cool heads (none)
Let try to keep a cool head. When you hear rumors of last minuet changes, go to your scheduled voting location for confirmation. Let the pole workers instruct you where to vote.
That said. Yes, get the message out, and find whoever is doing this.
