I see a lot of flailing around in the Democratic party and it concerns me a great deal. We can't seem to see the forest for the trees.
The Republican party is not merely a misguided and bumbling adversary. It is the home of fascists and theocrats. Its leaders are traitors. Its followers are sheep.
Our nation stands on the edge of a precipice. Only the Democratic party can keep it from tumbling over the edge into a fundamentalist Christian fascist wasteland of moral and economic bankruptcy.
Our mass media has already been neutered. Our social safety net is being taken apart, piece by piece. Our environment is being degraded. Our right to vote is disappearing. Our defense of human rights is evaporating. Republicans argue for a doctrine of preemptive war. Republicans argue for the development of smaller nuclear weapons that will remove the stigma of their deployment and use. Republicans allow corporations to control the dissemination of information, and time and again they shape it and mold it to suit their own interests. Republicans are secretive, fear-mongering, immoral traitors.
We think discussing who is to head the DNC is a productive use of our time. Or figuring out what went wrong. Or bashing Kerry. Or looking at this or that demographic group.
We don't seem to fully grasp just how dire the situation has become. Either that, or we are afraid to speak out. But speak out, we must.
After terrorists attack us again in the months ahead, as surely they will in retaliation for President Bush's reelection, the mass media will again package President Bush as a national hero. His approval rating will again soar. He will again use this as an excuse to push his radical fascist agenda and to further stamp out dissent.
What can we do to stop him? Or is it already too late?
