Every time I see one of those yellow ribbon car magnets that reads "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS" I am always puzzled. I wonder `How can I support our troops? I'm just one person, and I'm so far away from them.' I also wonder `What does it mean to support troops who have been asked to invade a country preemptively?' I can't help but think that this is a fundamentally important question.
Can examining history help me answer it? Perhaps looking back in time at what happened to other people whose troops aggressed against a foreign country will help me figure out what it means to support our military personnel in Iraq today. Should we Americans have supported our troops when we preemptively invaded Vietnam? Should Iraqis have supported their troops when they preemptively invaded Kuwait over ten years ago, an invasion that triggered the First Gulf War? Should the citizens of Germany have supported their troops when they invaded Poland preemptively in 1939? Did supporting German troops back then mean supporting and encouraging the Nazi regime? Is it possible to separate the war machine from its cogs? If so, can I support the troops but also oppose the war? If so, how? History tells us that the preemptive invaders of the past 65 years all lost in their military efforts. Japan and Germany were defeated by Allied forces in the 1940's. Americans eventually withdrew from Vietnam in the 1970's, unsuccessful at insuring democracy through military means. And Saddam Hussein's Iraqi troops were easily driven from the arid soil of Kuwait not that long ago. History also tells us that these preemptive invaders had some troops who committed atrocious acts above and beyond what was called for, and this begs the question, `Can I support some of our troops, but not all of them?' Is that allowed? I mean, I don't want to support the troops who've committed Geneva Convention crimes, like some American military personnel inarguably appear to have done at the Iraqi prisons we've seen in so many of those disturbing photographs (remember the caped and hooded Iraqi, standing barefoot on a pedestal, placed there as if to frighten away birds from a corn field--a sub-human scarecrow? Or, for you, did that image conjure up something more personally threatening: a shackled, caged, American-hating monster, perhaps?). I wouldn't want to support troops committing war crimes any more than I would want to support any person who espouses religious-based violence (for instance, Afghan-based bin Laden and his so-called holy war on the non-Muslim world, or closer to home, the Christian state senator from Oklahoma who recently called for the execution of doctors who perform abortions). Can I support our troops that just want to come home as fast as they can and receive hugs from their family and friends, and receive their promised college tuition assistance from Uncle Sam, but not the ones who have forced Iraqi men to masturbate each other as a means of humiliating them? (Does one join the armed forces because one actually wants to force men to masturbate each other--or force people to engage in any other kind of sex act by choreographing such acts at gunpoint--or is this just an expected by-product of any war?). Would it be patriotic of me to support our troops who protect convoys of food and medical aid to other troops and to the Iraqi people without supporting those who--through their commanding officers' orders--have killed or who have blown the arms, legs and heads off of innocent Iraqi men, women and children? Would that support suffice, or is playing favorites un-American? Is it okay to support our troops who are beginning to suffer from symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder--an often persisting and too frequently disabling psychiatric illness that commonly includes nightmares, emotional numbing, substance abuse, and flashbacks--but withhold my support from those who seem, although forever changed by their war experiences, asymptomatic? Is it an all-or-nothing support that I must give? The three-word slogan on the yellow ribbon magnets provides us absolutely no clues in answering these questions.
Equally importantly is this question: what form should my support of our troops take? Does placing a yellow ribbon-shaped magnet on my car that says I support them do the trick? Or, does that just make me feel better, but not really help anyone else? Does the money I shell out for the car magnet actually go to the troops, or does it go to--at the risk of sounding cynical--a war profiteer? If the money for my car magnet goes only to an entrepreneur and not the troops, then not only am I not supporting the troops, but I am being hypocritical by announcing to the traveling public that I am supporting the troops when I'm not! Good God, this yellow-ribbon-troop-support thing is getting complicated.
How about this for support: perhaps I can donate money to a mental health agency that specializes in substance abuse treatment, domestic violence prevention, suicide prevention, or services to the homeless. Since history tells us that veterans who serve during wartime suffer from these problems at higher rates than the general population, perhaps this is the way to show support. Or maybe to simplify my patriotic dilemma I could select one soldier to support. That's it! Although I wouldn't be supporting all of our troops, at least I'd be supporting one of them. Certainly that counts for something. Not only that, but putting a name and a face to my support would have the added benefit of making my patriotic experience more real, more immediate--like financially "adopting" one of those unfortunate overseas orphans seen on Christian television fundraisers. I'd know just exactly who it is I am supporting. That's gotta feel better than slapping a magnet on my car, and what's wrong with trying to feel a little better, especially during wartime? Hmmmm, but which person to support? Who's the lucky soldier? We have a lot of men and women who have been deployed to Iraq. It's a big list. How do I pare it down?
Well, let me start narrowing down the list by eliminating those troops for whom my support would be impossible: the American service-women and -men who have already died in Iraq. Depressing, yes, but it's a start. OK, so the following troops (actually, former troops) will be scratched from my list of potential armed forces supportees:

This really is depressing! Ya know, after reading that list, after attempting to put a face to a few of the names on it, and after thinking about the lives that these Americans might have had (had our government decided not to invade Iraq preemptively), I think that instead of supporting our troops by putting a yellow ribbon magnet on my car (or selecting just one soldier to somehow "support"), the troops would be better off if I VERY STRONGLY AND OPENLY OPPOSE THE WAR IN IRAQ! Eureka! That is how I will support our troops--by telling everyone I know about my opposition to our troops being sent overseas preemptively. An historic preemptive strike that is causing a lot of decent, young Americans to be killed (and causing them to occupy a foreign country and kill its people). Family, friends of family, friends, friends of friends, politicians, everyone; I'll tell everyone. I'll start by writing to the elected officials who represent me in my home state and in Washington, D.C. I'll get their email addresses from www.senate.gov/ and from www.house.gov/writerep/ and I will email them and tell them that I am opposed to the war in Iraq. I will beg them to do whatever they can to get our troops home safely, before another solider dies, before another Iraqi child learns to hate the United States and our allies for bombing his country, and before this child (and those watching the war on Al Jazeera) move closer and closer to adopting the values of bin Laden.
But my war opposition poses yet another question: do I put a magnet on my car that reads "I OPPOSE THE WAR IN IRAQ", or is that just a completely self-serving waste of time?
