During the run-up to the election, we all became spinners. Anyone who had an opinion about the presidential race became a spinner. Because there was a lot not to like--and a lot of ground to make up--for each candidate, the spin came fast and furious. And that's what it means to be a partisan.
But the election is over, so, once in a while, could we stop spinning so desperately? Spin is unavoidable--but when you start believing your own spin, that's how you get trapped in your echo chamber.
Recently, I've seen spinning about Kerry, the Democratic party, Howard Dean, liberals, urbanites, blue staters and the like. What do I mean by spin? Well, if you get to the point where your favored subjects are
always correct, you're definitely spinning. When your unfavored subjects are always wrong, you're also spinning.
Maybe it's just gotten to be unconscious by now, or a habit, but it's really annoying. How can you solve problems until you see them clearly? And how can you see them clearly unless you see through the spin.
Spin is necessary--spin is a fact of life. But don't get to the point where you believe all your spin. And...since we're among friends now, it would be nice to see a little less spinning--so we're all a little less dizzy.
