Seriously...
Saw Dean at the Women's Forum on C-SPAN- he was good. If every NH Dem (especially women) were forced to watch this video, I imagine he'd win big.
That said, three key opportunities Dean seems to be missing in his stump:
- "I'm a Doctor, let me tell you about that from a medical perspective"
- "Since we have a private practice, my wife and I own a small business"
- "As a Doctor, I see Bush has a substance abuse problem: O-I-L"
The three themes explained:
1. "I'm a Doctor, let me tell you about that from a medical perspective"
Dean was asked what he would do about Asthma. He gave a decent answer about Clear Skies, etc. What he should have said is "As a doctor, let me tell you what causes Asthma and what research is telling us ... now here is how we fix it". There are lots of opportunities to talk about medical-type issues- I think it would impress people- it certainly gives me goose bumps thinking about Dean medical-terminologying him.
2. "Since we have a private practice, my wife and I own a small business"
Dean did a GREAT job with this and needs to do this more often. He riffed on how he had to fill out the same paperwork as IBM, with a staff of 5 instead of 5000. THIS should be a key feature of all future stump speeches.
3. "As a Doctor, I see Bush has a substance abuse problem: O-I-L"
I love this. Not only does it remind people we've got a recovering addict in the White House - and not only is it true, but what can Bush say about it? If he protests, he reminds people he had a DUI, etc. If he doesn't, people are still reminded. If Dean is not the nominee, the Dem Candidate MUST include this line. Its just more effective because Dean is a DOCTOR.
And one thing Dean needs to watch:
No further riffing on whether people are better/worse off either here or in Iraq with Saddam gone. Sure, Dean is on the money with his comments- but that is pretty much like saying "Say what you will about Castro, but he's got a 99% literacy rate". It just ain't gonna fly.
This could be another case where he could use his M.D.:
"I'll tell you something, as a Doctor I am appalled at the medical care available to the Iraqi people. Saddam had all this money, yet 90% of his people lacked basic care."
