The Boston Globe is reporting that Wesley Clark has opted to remain within the public campaign financing regime. He will be accepting matching funds and their attendent spending limits.
This move confuses me as it is giving Dean one hell of an uncontested club to beat the rest of the field senseless with. As I have said before Dean can make the argument that he is the only one who can go head to head against Bush financially and if you are worried about electability as a primary decision criteria, he is providing electability to himself.
I am surprised with Clark's decision because financially it does not make a lot of sense. The Globe is reporting that he expects to raise 6 million in Q-4, so he'll have roughly 9.5 million collected. Assuming that he maintains his previous fundraising pattern, he is probably eligible for 5 million in matching funds on January 1st. Does he need a cash infusion that badly to give Dean a club to beat him senseless with?
