I get these updates from LAW (Canada's Lawyers Against the War) in email form so I will paste the entire text here for your reading pleasure:
24 December 2004
Lawyers against the War--LAW has completed the filing of documents to become a co-complainant in the torture charges filed in Germany against US Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld and 11 other named high ranking individuals in the US civil and military administration. The indictment and supporting brief were filed by the New York based Center for Constitutional Rights--CCR on November 30th 2004.
International law groups that have since become co-complainants in the prosecution are:
Ø The International Federation for Human Rights Leagues - FIDH was founded in 1922 by a group of French and German lawyers to promote international human rights and was the first international human rights organization. FIDH has 115 member leagues in 90 countries.
Ø Lawyers against the War - LAW is a Canada-based international committee of jurists and others operating since October 2001 to oppose illegal war and to advocate for adherence to international humanitarian law and against impunity for violators. LAW has members in 14 countries.
Ø The Republican Attorneys and Lawyers Association - RAV was founded in 1979 as a "self-defense" organization because of the criminal prosecution of lawyers in political cases in Germany.
Ø The Association of Democratic Lawyers of Germany:
RAV and the Association of Democratic Lawyers of Germany are members of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers IADL
CCR will issue a press release within the coming week announcing LAW and FIDH joining the prosecution and the discovery of additional documents including those made public by the American Civil Liberties Union.
An English translation of the entire CCR brief will be available soon and will be linked on the LAW website.
