Many think Sports is a metaphor for life. If that's the case, then events this year mean Kerry could be headed to the White House. A couple of examples(from various sources, including MYDD and MSNBC.com):
- The Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees. Now of course many Dems love the Yankees, and Republicans I'm sure root hard for the BoSox. But look at the teams themselves. The Yankees are the team that always seem to get the positive attention(like the GOP), while the Red Sox are always crapped on for the curse. This year, down 3-0 and all but counted out, the Red Sox did the impossible and beat the Yankees.
- Look at the ownership of the teams. George Steinbrenner is a GOP donor, accoridng to opensecrets.org, having forked over 2 grand to Bush. The principle owners of the Red Sox, Tom Werner and John Henry, are both Democratic supporters.
3. The New England Patriots have been awesome this year, setting a record for consecutive games won. Who did they beat last week? The NY Jets. Another interesting metaphor: The Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl in Feb, when it was essentially a Kerry v. Edwards duel in the primaries. And Kerry won.
4.(stolen from MYDD). Forget a Texas-Massachusetts WS. Bush was a Rangers owner, not Houston. Why was the Red Sox defeat of the Cards more significant? Because Bill DeWitt and Mercer Reynolds who were Bush's partners in Texas are now the owners of the Cardinals. They both were in charge of W.'s inaugural committee fours years and ago, and Reynolds and another man Stephen Brauer were both appointed Ambassadors. All men are very close to Bush and have been very generous to his campaign. If only they could have used the money to get another decent starting pitcher(sorry Im being mean now ;). And dont forget who threw out the first pitch on Opening Day at Busch Stadium: Why the president himself (MYDD has a picture).
5. Finally, remember where the conventions were this year? Boston(first political convention ever) was where the Democrats met, and NYC hosted the GOP. Boston has shown itself, sportswise, to be better than NY, at least this year.
So there you have it. What does any of this mean? Ok, maybe nothing, but it is something to enjoy. Oh, and watch the Green Bay v. Washington game this weekend. Go Pack :).
