This argument ought to be seen as an insult to our democracy, that we have to kowtow to terrorists and can't expect an election based on the will of the American people. No, we have to quake in our boots about our decision, caving in to whatever Osama bin Laden's whims are!
From Oklahoma, Republican Congressman Tom Cole, who at first likened a vote for Kerry as a vote for Hitler, now wants us to make sure we vote for Bush, because anything else would be something Osama would like. You know, the minute we care about what Osama wants, the minute we elect a president just to satisfy or dissatisfy Osama, we can officially say the terrorists have won.
Link: During a speech to Republicans in Yukon, Okla., last Saturday, the first-term congressman said that "if George Bush loses the election, Osama bin Laden wins the election" since enemies of the United States would interpret it as a sign of weakness.
"What do you think Hitler would have thought if Roosevelt would've lost the election in 1944? He would have thought American resolve was" (weakening), Cole said, according to a spokeswoman.
This is a filthy argument, very foolish. I would argue that Osama could just as easily interpret throwing Bush out of office as a sign of American strength, that we are so secure, that our democracy has such vitality that we're able to do exactly what we want to do without regard to his evil will. If we have to keep a president around, even a miserable failure as George Bush is, just to bow to some invisible menace, then why bother to have an election? Why bother to promote democracy? Tom Cole should just say he wants a dictatorship and get it over with.
And this stupid comment about Hitler and FDR, I read someone else's comments about it, that what would Cole say about all the Republicans who voted against FDR in '44? Were they sympathetic to Hitler? That's an awful lot of Nazis in our midst! And we've still got a few of them around. Maybe even one in Oklahoma!
No sir! Osama doesn't get a vote in this election. And by crowning Osama the kingmaker in America, Rep. Tom Cole himself deserves to be kicked out of office. First term congressman, he probably should be allowed a few idiot remarks, but hey, this is aid and comfort he's giving to the enemy! He's a reckless scoundrel.
