Afghan Interior Minister Ali Ahmad Jalali said the arrest (of Saddam) would help improve security in Afghanistan by dampening the ability of militant groups to recruit fighters here.
"What happens in Iraq is also something to do with the situation in Afghanistan. Since the war in Iraq, the terrorist organizations have tried to open a new front in Afghanistan, so any failure of terrorism in Iraq is going to effect the situation in Afghanistan," Jalali told The Associated Press.
This is a pipedream.
If it turns out that the Iraq situation is drastically improved, why wouldn't terrorists do like they did before, and move to where they can feel more free to develop their plans?
Of course, if it isn't true and the violence continues in Iraq, then non-Saddamists are going to get the credit and be seen as the true leader of the violence - and of anti-Americanism. Sounds like a recruiting tool to me.
The capture of Saddam is symbolic, but the reality of the value is to be determined, and no amount of optimism anywhere other than Iraq will matter.
