Last "listening device" update, Daily Kos visitors and diarists were asked
How acceptable is wiretapping in the 21st century?
44 percent voted not acceptable at all, 51 percent wished they could get past Oval Office security and plant their own listening device, and 3 percent voted wiretapping more acceptable then ever.
On analysis of this data I endeavour to satisfy 100 percent. Yes, all of the people all of the time! Satisfied! Daily Kos visitors and diarists, each one of you in your individuality have contributed to this experimental solution, providing the 44 percent with a means to lash back in counter-covertsy, the 51 percent with backup hardware, and the 3 percent with a device they'll find more acceptable then ever. Daily Kos visitors and diarists... Make your own listening device! A listening device almost impossible to wiretap, while at the same time lending itself to the gathering of secrets.
You will need... (read on)
Two tins (clean emptied), string, a hammer, a small nail, a large file.
- Admire ingenuity.
- Use the hammer and nail to make a small hole in the bottom of each tin. With the file, file any sharp bits off the edges of the tins - especially at the top where the lid came off.
- Cut a piece of string, tie a knot at one end. Thread the other end through the open top of one tin and through the hole in the bottom, then through the hole in the bottom of the other tin and out it's open top. Tie another knot (to stop tins falling off).
Hold tins so string is taut. To operate, see picture below (two operators required).
To auto-load pictures, right click on the X, view properties. Copy the image link and open it in IE. Load it. Then hit back. It should display in the page. If you are a firefox user right click on the icon, chose "view image". If it doesn't work either a. to many of you are hitting on it at the same time or b. something is censoring our network.
Next update: do it yourself covert listening.
Finishing this update: with answers to your questions from previous update.
Kos diarist Q: I'm still confused on why the U.S. government would be slipping something into the jacket of someone living in Australia.
A: The world works in mysterious ways and many of us are confused. Our job as diarists is to smooth out the confusions and learn to understand one another (somehow). It may be that the Australian government and the U.S. government are working together in monitoring their respective citizens. It is our job as citizens to monitor the monitoring.
Kos diarist Q: Dropping a device like that into someone's coat pocket would be about the stupidest way to bug someone imaginable. I mean, what if it fell out of their pocket or something?
A: Agreed. Device concealed in lining?
Kos diarist Q: I could make a listening device that looked like that, but it wouldn't have enough range to be useful. Unless it was the inside job, got any dogs and cats?
A: You could! But why would anyone bug my cat?
And, again, many many thanks for all the suggestions in identifying the unidentifiable device (probably for listening) and for all the suggestions on what to do with a listening device, once found (deserving of a whole separate update).
