As referenced today by
my senior senator, I'd love to engender a conversation on today's very strategic maneuver...to be proactive with the prospective judiciary appointment, vs. reactive.
What are your thoughts as you listened to some of these speeches? That we are learning? That we have found, as some perhaps less PC than I, have stated, "our sac"? That it is a bit out-of-place to be having these conversations with no resignation formally announced?
"Consultation", says Senator Schumer. That's a powerful word, and with this administration, an all-too-absent concept.
Kennedy. Leahy. Schumer. That's a powerful lineup, with decades of leadership behind them.
And a new Supreme Court Apppointment, coupled with the elevation of a new Chief Justice. That's a powerful story, with the potential to alter the face with which the United States turns to the world.
Nothing above is news to any of you...you know it, and if you're on this site, you agree with it.
So we have consultation, and we have power as themes...how are they related? I'd argue that, more often than not in the world, these are mutually exclusive: those that wield power have no need for consultation, they can simply ram through whatever they desire. Those without it require consultation to marshal power from others.
This is why I view today as a masterstroke...those that grant power in our country (the people, at least ideally...let's stay idyllic for a bit here and forget Diebold, etc.), can also take it away. To win in the minority, you must convince people that consultation is necessary, not that that the other side is right/wrong. You can't do the latter, I think the last few years have demonstrated that. And by taking this to the senate floor, and hopefully the airwaves and print publications, our leadership has taken the initiative.
Get the populace clamoring for a truly bipartisan effort. Should this not be delivered, the people will begin to understand what is broken in our country (and it's not that "they are stupid" or "don't get it"), and vote appropriately next year...for only one party can roadblock such an effort. If it is delivered, the country wins.
Now a question: How much play does this get in the MSM? Or does it go there to die?
