OK, I wanted to have some fun. The more diaries I read (and write), the more common themes I see. I wanted to bring up some of them, maybe in a Seinfeld-esk way (what's the issue with xxxx?) and see if you had any to add. Let's see, where to start...
1) Diary beginnings... many of them start with "it is well known" or "it is common knowledge" as do some of mine. I enterpret this to mean "I hope you know what I'm referring to because I don't want to spend an hour on Google and Lexus-Nexis finding the relevant links to spell it out."
2) Vague rants as statements of fact instead of personal opinion. I don't mind them; in fact I feel for the author and their need to vent. "The Bush Administration are destroying the world. They are lower than low." Well, O.K., but do you have any specifics? Substitute Bush Administration with Liberals and there's nothing you can't find on LGF or Blogsforbush, and aren't we better than that?
3) Exceedingly long diaries. And I mean looonnnngggg ones. Don't they know the limitations of my attention span? Sure, they may be relevant and well-written, but by paragraph 23 I'm on my way to rawstory.com.
4) Diaries that include the author's life story. I'm on the fence about these; this may be my own personal opinion. Perhaps I'm just looking for the larger picture in a Dairy. Some diarists I find myself feeling for in an extremely personal way, but how much of your life story do I really need to hear before you get to the point?
OK, I think I'm done. Any thoughts? Additions? Admonishments? Accusations? Corrections?
