i have been waiting on
this launch for a while. this is the younger generation of progressive's effort to discuss a guiding set of principles for our movement.
Spearheaded by 2020 Democrats in partnership with a host of activists, intellectuals, electeds and other progressive groups, the Principles Project is a nationwide online effort to unite the progressive movement with common language to describe our core set of principles.
the project is co-sponsored by 21st Century Democrats, the Rockridge Institute, Young Democrats of America, College Democrats of America, Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century, Cosmopolity, Democratic Gain and Swing the State. Dem legislators have also thrown their support behind it as well: Pelosi, Harold Ford, Janice Schakowsky and former DNC chair David Wilhem.
basically they have a
first draft of our principles and the are soliciting the help of all progressive Democrats to
discuss the draft and move towards a final one. CivicSpace is the platform, so the discussions are fully threaded and you can log-in to an account.
so go help them out and join the discussion. this is a great opportunity to either guide the younger generation, or participate in your own future political goals. 2020 Dems are mostly a volunteer operation and they have been working their butt off, but now they can use a collective mind. for we are all much more powerful than a couple of people sitting in DC deciding your platform.
[Update]
here is the first draft preamble:
We choose an America that embodies the great ideals on which it was founded: a nation where all enjoy the freedom to reach their human potential, the freedom to live according to their beliefs, and the freedom to share in the labors and fruits of our society’s progress. As the highest celebration of these ideals, we ask: what more can we achieve? How can we ensure these freedoms are available to everyone, at home and across the globe? And how can we strengthen that freedom for future generations?
Today, these ideals are under attack by those who say: there is nothing more to be done. They say all that is left is to struggle against one another for individual profit. They would rather we stand alone and in fear, rather than strive together for a world that is more prosperous, more just, and more free.
Progressives have the memory to know how far we’ve come. We have the humility to know how far we have yet to go. And we commit to the work, and to the fight, for each step on the journey.
We make this commitment because we believe:
