I am confronted with one of the most serious political decisions of this New Year. What do I wear for the Montana Inaugural Ball?
Last year at this time, I was looking forward to attending a Blogger's Ball at the inauguration of President Howard Dean. Okay, that was a long shot. But after John Kerry swept the primaries, I looked forward to celebrating with my veteran friends in DC with getting rid of a coward and a deserter out of the White House. Instead I'm faced with, what do I wear to Brian Schweitzer's inaugural ball?
Being in Montana, we are not into formal dress occasions. I have two suits, which I wear for weddings, funerals, and lobbying politicians. Okay, you might make a good argument that this is a mixture of a wedding and a lobbying occasion. But the
formal dress directions are vague.
Tickets are cheap ($10 a head for music and dancing) and there's a no host bar. Mrs. Ed in Montana and I will be attending the fancier (formal) function at the Civic Center, with music by pianist Phillip Aaberg, among others, so I should dress up.
I've never worn a tux, and am not about to at this point. I don't do cowboy, with the pointy shoes, string ties, and giant black hats, but I need to blend in and lobby the Montana politicos in some fashion. Heh, it's not every year democrats take over the entire state government.
My most expensive outfit is my fly-fishing waders, vest and hat but I don't look forward to bumping into folks in the crowded venues, even with the barbless hooks on my vest.
One friend has already lectured me; "What are you worried about, with a Governor that comes to work in blue jeans and a Lt. Governor who is famous for his collection of bowties?"
Take the poll.
