on the way to zingerman's last night, i was listening to the sean hannity show on wjr 760. some guy called in, and tried to rationalize american torture of iraqi prisoners by saying that "putting women's underwears [sic] on people's heads is not torture -- its humiliation."
then hannity agreed, and said that humiliation is clearly different than torture, and that we must do whatever we need to do to win the war on terror.
sean hannity, to you i say the following: fuck you.
we are the freaking united states of america. every day on your show you wax romantic about how we are the greatest nation in the world, with the highest, most moral aims in the world. you even use "freedom" as a central tenet of your rhetoric. you even wrote a book called "Let Freedom Ring".
does the greatest, most moral nation in the history of earth put "women's underwears" [sic] on the heads of our prisoners for no reason? does the greatest nation in the world lower itself to using "humiliation" as a last ditch attempt to rationalize a war that the greatest nation in the world started for no reason?
should the greatest nation in the world even need to have the concept of "torture" injected into our lexicon of "war on terror" vocabulary?
if we really are the only superpower remaining, why can't we just choose an objective and accomplish it, without sacraficing the "moral superiority" you and your neo-conservative brethren trumpet?
put down the kool-aid.
