Recent polls show a majority of Americans think the Iraq war was a mistake. At the same time, a majority also incorrectly believes Saddam had weapons of mass destruction AND a majority also falsely believes Iraq gave support to Al Qaeda before 9/11 or was even directly involved in planning the attack. So there are many who believe the war was not worth it even despite these misconceptions. Imagine how they'll feel when they find out it was all lies! Accordingly, here is my suggestion for an ad the DNC should be running. It's sketchy, and additional words on the screen and/or voice overs would need to be added to link the segments.
Note: there really is footage of Bush saying all the things I've quoted or paraphrased below. I think it's high time we used Bush's own words against him! My proposed ad after the flip....
Segment 1: Bush saying "We have no evidence that Iraq was involved in September 11."
Segment 2: Newspaper headlines trumpeting the universal conclusion that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction prior to our invasion.
Segment 3: Bush joking about the weapons - looking around the Oval Office saying, "no weapons here...."
Segment 4: Bush at news conference saying those who would attack our troops should "Bring it on."
Segment 5: Bush at black tie dinner saying "We have quite an array here, the haves and the have-mores. Some people call you the elites, I call you my base."
End with message: Tell your representatives in Congress to stop blindly following Bush. He's led the country down the wrong path long enough!
The end message could also link the segments to Bush's fraudulent campaign on Social Security - e.g., "tell them NOT to follow the President in his campaign to privatize Social Security" or something like that....
--------
The Republicans in Congress are so closely tied to Bush and his policies that a campaign tearing him down (as he so richly deserves to be) would bring them down with him (just as Newt's tearing down of Clinton brought down the Dems in 1994). In this regard, it might be especially effective to make the connection between Bush's previous lies and callous attitudes and his current campaign against Social Security.
Given Bush's ill-conceived anti-Social Security campaign, some who voted for Bush or didn't bother to vote may be feeling significant "buyer's remorse" right now, so an ad like this could be particularly effective at this time and help set the tone in our favor when the 2006 election season begins (hit them early and often, to paraphrase a Chicago saying).
I am posting this diary to ask for comments on and suggestions for how to complete, fill in, polish, etc. the ad before I send it to the DNC. Information regarding to whom at the DNC I should address the suggestion (especially direct email addresses) would also be greatly appreciated.
