This whole Schiavo is a tragedy. Both for the family and for the republicans. I wish the family well, but not the republicans. The republicans have done everything in their power to try and prolong this tragedy for the Schiavo family. Once the Schiavo's trgedy has reached its end, it is our job to figure out how to prolong the tragedy for the republicans.
Out of decency we should wait until Schiavo is dead and buried. But once a resonable mourning period has past, we need to start campaigns in as many states as possible to "make sure this travesty doesn't happen here." That is we need state laws and/or constitutional amendments giving greater legal force to living wills and the decision of the spouce in such matters.
It is good policy both morally and politically. The moral argument should be obvious to us progressives so I won't bore you with it here. The political advantage is that it will keep this issue (where 80+% of the population agrees with us) in the publics mind. It will also put more strain on the liberatrian-fundamentalist alliance in the republican party.
I don't have specific suggestion for what the wording of these laws or amendments. But they should be as simple and as reasonable as possible.
