For all of you against drilling in ANWR, here's some "ammo."

This is the first two paragraphs from today's Anchorage Daily News.

"As many as 80 workers were hustling Monday to clean up oily water in what ranks as one of the largest industrial spills ever seen in the North Slope oil fields."

"The spill came from a buried pipeline at a gravel production pad on the western side of the Kuparuk oil field. Kuparuk is the Slope's biggest oil field after Prudhoe Bay."

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

and my guess is that this story will not make the corporate news until after the Oil-Bidness boys announce that "everything's been all cleaned up."

have, as far as I can see...Just the ADN.
      •  Reporting seems to be an issue (none)
Another incident: Alaska Agency says BP failed to report spills

"The spills occurred on July 31, 2003 and on Dec. 5, 2004, when gas was sucked into wells, causing sprays of drilling muds and oil that shot up as high as 85 feet in the air, the department said."  --the spills were small and quickly contained, but they were not properly reported to authorities.
The Seattle Times has additional information.

        Another non-reporting problem on March 22, 2005

        Seattle Times
The 850-foot tanker Polar Discovery involved in a spillage that wasn't reported. ...."Carroll implicated his company, ConocoPhillips, and its subsidiary fleet, Polar Tankers. He said he reported that day's events as soon as he got off the ship to a fleet manager in Long Beach, Calif. The fleet manager, David Whiting, refused to comment. Carroll says Whiting told him not to worry, and to go on vacation."

It's hard enough to make the case when the corporate media isn't picking up the story, but the reliance on whistle blowers and regional newspapers to get the information to the general public is more disturbing.

  •  Won't matter when we're all raptured! (4.00)
Oh, how we'll laugh as we thumb our angelic noses at those oily environmentalists and fly heavenward, singing "See ya, suckers!" And James Watt will meet us at the pearly gates to check that our names appear in the direct mail lists rented from the Schindlers (St. Peter having been downsized for demonstrating insufficient message discipline, of course)!

I printed out your post and stuffed it into a voodoo doll and chained it to a rock in my garden.

Maybe your hard crunchy soul will ascend, but with your body still here with a voodoo life-support curse on it, you're stuck here with the rest of us you thumb-nosing KiloWatt-burning freeper!
