I was driving home tonight, listening to NPR, and was AMAZED at the reporting on Terri Schiavo's life. The reporter worked hard, investigated her past, told the story of her childhood, her dog when she grew up, and on and on and on! They actually did an excellent job of humanizing her....making her real as a person for those of us listening.
I got sicker and sicker of the absurdity of the storyline...the peculiarity of how this one American life, this one American story has evolved into something that all of our country apparently has become enamored with.
Terri - the latest American designer drug....
TELL ME....WHY IS TERRI SCHIAVO'S LIFE ANY MORE IMPORTANT THAN THOSE 130,000 IRAQI'S WHO HAVE DIED SINCE WE INVADED? WHY HAS OUR NEWS MEDIA NOT TOLD SOME OF THEIR STORIES IN SUCH A COMPELLING, HUMANIZING MANNER? WHY IS OUR COUNTRY WILLING TO BE SO BIGGOTED, SO EGOCENTRIC THAT WE VALUE ONE WHITE, AMERICAN LIFE SO FAR ABOVE ANY OTHER???
Here's why.....because its' one more way to drug ourselves into oblivion....think not America, don't burden yourself with having to consider the sanctity of life....ALL LIFE...you can simply believe you are so loving, caring and righteous that it is fine to throw away the constitution simply because you feel like it....worry not America...just keep taking the drugs....
