When I was a child, we had numerous dogs. We had the little ones, Yorkshire Terriers, and the big ones, Samoyeds. At the age of 12, I personally trained four different dogs to the point where I was able to enter them in obedience trials at dog shows. I even appeared on TV once in my turquoise dress and my white Samoyed. The most important aspects of obedience training of canines are establishing your authority, consistency, and reward.
Unknowingly I have been using these lessons on my Republican friend. First of all, arguing with them is a total waste of time. What you do is present them with "facts," very, very gently. Their first response will be "I don't believe that." So, you give them points and authorities ( links). Then you absolutely shut your mouth. Just the facts, but you keep repeating the facts - in a very calm matter of fact voice. Then you drop it; let it go. No screaming, no yelling, no calling them ignorant dickheads. It helps to take numerous deep breaths.
The Republican that I am trying to obedience train is almost 80 years old and she is a dyed in the wool Republican. She admitted to me last week that she puts party above country. I quietly hung up on her at that point. That was Friday night.
My friend called me tonight (seeking approval) and we were talking about Bolton. She said, "Well, he has been very anti-UN, so maybe he's not the best choice. In a soft voice I praised her. She's also coming around on DeLay. It's "hard work," but it's worth it!.
