Senator Reid's statement yesterday made a strong case for the filibuster and against the nuclear option, but it didn't hit Bushco where they are weakest: on social security.
The fact is that the nuclear option is the first step in destroying social security. Bush first tried to bamboozle the public with his 60 days tour on privatization. That didn't work. So now the nuclear option has come out from under the wraps. Once the filibuster becomes history, the republican majority in congress will be able to pass Bush's privatization scheme, taking the first step in destroying social security as we know it. It won't matter that there is no democratic support whatsoever.
I urge everyone to write letters to your local papers making the case that a vote to end the filibuster is a vote to end social security. It's as simple as that. Every democrat who talks about the nuclear option should firmly link it with Bush's attempts to undermine social security. The nuclear option is just another means to achieve Bush's goal on social security.
The issue of the judges is merely a smokescreen. The real target here is social security. Write to your local papers. Call your congressional reps and senators! Tell them to stand up for social security by supporting the filibuster!
