This is pretty amazing. All day, I've been monitoring the news, and was led to believe that the protests against the alleged defilement of the Koran at Guantanamo Bay was localized in Afghanistan. I mean, isn't that what you would believe from this report?
The trigger that launched the deadly and destructive student-led demonstrations which began peacefully on 10 May in the eastern Nangarhar Province and spread to at least eight other provinces around Nangarhar and in the southern and northern parts of the country as well as Kabul are well-known. What is less understood is who has been fueling these rallies and for what purpose.

So imagine my surprise when I read this:
Angry protests raged across the Muslim world from Gaza to Indonesia on Friday over a report U.S. interrogators at Guantanamo Bay had desecrated the Koran, with calls for retaliation and a rising death toll.
Governments demanded investigations and thousands took to the streets in outrage over a Newsweek magazine report that interrogators at a U.S. military prison in Cuba had put the Muslim holy book on toilets, in at least one case flushing it down.
It looks a lot more serious than I've been led to believe!
