I've come to believe that we need to ammend the Constitution of the United States to add a Voting Rights Ammendment. Let's have a discussion of what should be in it.
No voter should have to wait more than a few minutes to vote. Establishing maximum size of precincts would go a long way to minimizing lines at polls.
Mandate a verifiable paper ballot to be used if electronic voting machines are used.
Restrict the actions of "voter challengers".
Same-day voter registration. It works in Minnesota, and would help eliminate the disenfranchisement of voters such as that which occurred in Florida in 2000.
Restore the rights of felons to vote after release from prison. There's bound to be debate on this one, but it needs to be debated. I believe one state allows felons in prison to vote, others automatically reinstate voting rights upon release from prison. Others allow the citizen to apply for reinstatement after a time, and in some states, felons can never have their voting rights reinstated.
I welcome any discussion on this. Am I leaving something out? Is there disagreement over what I have included? If we come to a consensus, them maybe we can format it to make it look more like an ammendment.
