(February 2004) On Edwards:
He's awfully young. Yes, Mam, thank goodness he's 51. He's young enough to be full of vim and vigor, but old enough to know better. By the way, JFK was 43.
He hasn't been in the Senate long. Yes, Mam, isn't that a good thing!, Imagine the kind of person it takes to stay 20 years in a slow place like that. Not the best place for a Road Runner. This guy's Hans Solo not Yoda. Same held true for Kennedy and Lincoln, They went to Washington and realized that their skills were made for the Executive's office not back room deals. Bold and aggressive ideas start with a leader and need the office of the President. But how about putting out some bold ideas that don't involve war and making more money. How about free college? How about broadband for rural communities so that we can outsource there instead of India?
He'd make a good vice president. Well, yes Mam, four years ago. Now he's too ready to be wasted in that spot. His time is now. That's what all those newspaper editors say. Would you have wanted JFK to be LBJ's VP?
He's a smooth talking trial lawyer. Yes, Mam, and isn't it nice to be smooth talked instead of scared to death. Abe Lincoln was a trial lawyer and let's not forget Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird". I like his style and his ideas give me hope. Like D.L. Hughley said on "Real Time" with Bill Maher, "I'll join his church. Why even Al Sharpton should join his church". Wouldn't it be nice to have someone smooth talk their way out of a crisis instead of loading up the AK 47? I like watching Tony Soprano on TV. I don't want him as President.
He's a Southerner. That's right, Mam. Must be why he's so sunny. He represents the best of the South; strong family values, a hard work ethic, and , of course fried chicken. What's not to like? He's the perfect antidote to seasonal affective disorder. In fact, he might be the answer to this millennial affective disorder that all this terror talk has caused.
Addendum (June, 2005):
Democrats and Progressives need to learn how to smile more. Bush makes a dumb remark 5 times a day, but he has the advantage in that it is the main stream media that smiles and explains to their audience what Georgie really meant. We don't have the advantage of a sympathetic media, so we all need to thank Howard Dean for providing the fireworks so that Democrats like John Edwards can get some air time. But someone needs to either muzzle Blowhard Biden or all of us here should complain any time he's chosen as "a spokesman" for our party. Dean and Edwards are basically on the same populist page and will get their rhythm soon.
