I would love to see Bush and his minions impeached, but let's face it, it is not a likely scenario with a repug majority in the house and senate. As I was driving home from work tonight, I was thinking this whole impeachment thing through. It would need to be approached as any other criminal prosecution, i.e., beyond a reasonable doubt. What we have now is hearsay. We have memos written by unknown sources. It's not enough.
We would need to have a special prosecutor with subpoena power. We need the authors of the various Downing Street Minutes and Memos to personally appear and testify. I don't think that would be an easy thing since they are not American citizens.
We're not going to get a special prosecutor while we have the repug majority in the house and senate. We have a chance after the 06 elections. Assuming that we win back either the house or senate, or both, the next question is do we want to shut the whole government down for years while we try to impeach Bush? The American public will not like that very much. It is simply not in the best interests of our country. The American public have their own personal agendas, and holding Bush and Co accountable is probably not high on the list.
I'm not saying that we give up the idea, but I am saying that impeachment will take so long that Bush and his cohorts will probably serve out their entire tenure before we could accomplish it. Perhaps criminal charges after they are out of office might be more appropriate. I want them to be held accountable as much as anyone does. I yearn to see them in those ugly orange jumpsuits. I look foward to seeing the fall of the house of Bush.
