I have to get this off my chest.
There are many people, most of them well-intentioned, who think that a sensible fix for "e-voting" is to get paper receipts for our vote.
This is a terrible idea.
That means all they have to do is lie to us by giving us a fake receipt. "Yeah, here's the receipt that "proves" you voted for candidate So-and-so........ Ha ha ha. SUCKERS!"
If they can electronically change vote counts now, which we know they CAN do, there's absolutely no guarantee they won't just give us bogus receipts.
Also, nobody has thought about how a recount would be done. Would we go door-to-door and tell everybody to ransack their houses to look for those little slips of paper?
How many actual receipts would we need to make a recount official? What percentage? What about people who lost them or threw them away? How would their rights be upheld?
How would we prove that a receipt is real? I can fake almost any kind of document you could ever want right here on my home computer.
The paper receipts for electronic voting are nothing more than a psychological band-aid, just one more lie, one more layer of smoke to the smokescreen.
I'm curious how others feel about this. I haven't been at Dailkos very long so I really don't have a feel for some things yet.
End corporate welfare as we know it is my mantra. Which means get the goddamn corporations out of our voting!
