was talking about safety in New York and elsewhere and it got me wondering.
If there were bomb-sniffing dogs, extra eyes, more cops and video cameras ... would that really keep us any safer?
If I compare it to computer piracy, the creation of new security measures only leads to new ways to defeat those measures.
It's a pretty fatalistic way to look at it, I know, but is there any way for us to be safe? It doesn't seem to me there's any real way to keep us safe. If someone wants to put a real hurt on America, primarily in major areas because that's where people will notice it, then they're going to find a way to make that happen.
So how do we stop terrorism?
It seems the only way to stop people from attackign us, those who are truly committed, is to not give them a reason to attack us in the first place.
However, if they're stated goal is to remove us from the planet, how do we not go after them? Where's the line between provoking and protecting ourselves?
When does being nice and fair stop working and actually put us in more danger than attacking would?
Mostly, I'm just confused.
