This is on the front page of
today's SF Chronicle.
Apparently the annual upwelling of cold water that brings nutrients to the continental shelf of the western US simply isn't happening this year, for the first time in anyone's memory. Since this is the basis of the marine food chain of the entire coast, it looks pretty disastrous. Seabird populations on the Farallones are already way down.
I hope this isn't as bad as it sounds.
