It seems clear to me now that the GOP is out of practice playing defense. Attack is like riding a bike for them. But defense? Not so much.
I watched Hardball's segment with Republican Tucker Eskew and Dee Dee Myers. Both sucked big time. Dee Dee, nice person that she no doubt is, just is not good at this sort of thing. Tucker Eskew is great on the attack. But was not good on defense. He really was making no sense, trying to turn it into an attack on Wilson, but it fell flat because it had little to do with the issue.
Chris Matthews tried to help out Eskew with some ridiculous softball questions - "Doesn't this sort of thing happen all the time?" Uh no Chris, it is not often that people out covert CIA operatives. It is against the law you know.
Luckily, David Gregory was on the show and stepped in, correcting misstatements by Eskew and getting to the point - the White House lied to the American People about the fact that Rove leaked that Valerie Plame was a CIA operative.
That's the story now. The law will take care of itself. The Plame prosecutor will tell us about that if and when he hands down indictments.
But the White House has been lying to the American People about the fact that Rove leaked Plame's identity and about the fact that the President would fire whoever leaked this information.
Dee Dee, for the next time, that's all you need to know.
