Seems to me that this issue isn't any big deal around here. Yesterday there was a diary on the situation emerging for women in Iraq, and it fell to the bottom. Does this community care that Iraqi women are clearly under attack in Iraq? Is this an issue that gets "front paged?" or even recommended?
Iraq is a mess, each day more and more people are killed by insurgents. Men, women and children are equally targeted for death. Beyond that equality there are clear indications that the new constitution emerging in Iraq seeks to impose Islamic Law on women, and in doing so will take away many of the rights women had in Iraq.
Our invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped to create another Middle Eastern country that will have legally taken away the ability for women to be full citizens. And yet, there is hardly a mention of this here.
I realize that Rove, Roberts and other issues are important to all of us, yet it is deeply concerning that we are ignoring the plight of what is happening to the women of Iraq, especially as our invasion has directly influenced the ever restrictive rights of women in Iraq.
This administration is not addressing this issue either, they continue to talk of how they are "spreading freedom" and creating a "Democracy" in Iraq, yet the draft constitution that has been created in Iraq will limit the rights of women to that which is granted them under Islamic Law, which means they will have fewer rights then men.
Is this not a means to get a message out of how much of a failure this administration is? Of how the "Democracy" that is forming in Iraq resembles the government in Iran rather then the US? Is this not a concern here? 13 million Iraqi's are at risk of being less then full citizens, and hardly a peep here.
Perhaps I take this issue to heart as I am a woman. It is an outrage to me to see what our occupation of Iraq has done to women in that country, it is a further outrage to see so little attention to this issue.
If you care to read exactly what the new draft Iraqi constitution is offering women, I posted a diary with some links to articles on MyLeftWing.com, here is the link to that diary:
Part II: Women in Iraq: We invade and they lose their freedom
Yesterday this diary by petewsh61 was posted here on the same subject:
To Iraqi Women: Wear the veil or face death
I realize there are many issues that are concerning to us, at the same time it is disturbing to see that this issue seems to fall so far down the list that there is little if any discussion of what our actions have done to the rights of half of a country.
