I will vote for any candidate, Democrat or Republican, who will say something to the effect of the following:
If I am elected, my first order of business is to impeach George W. Bush
Of course, my vote will fall to the left... but if a Republican says impeach and a Democrat doesn't, I'm voting for the Republican.
After all, that's really our first order of business, right?
The Bush administration has painted itself into a corner, using many different colors. Their incompetence has led us to a situation in Iraq with no good solutions... there's no getting out of the Plame leak be it jail time or massive political damage at the least... people are starting to comprehend the numerous lies that are all on the record, which will likely mean no recovery from approval ratings. Oh yeah, and hello deficit? Gas prices? Does anyone really think any of that is going to change before 2006?
Hell, even the press is budding with integrity... and once they remember why they wanted to be journalists, it'll hard to make them forget again.
Additionally, one interesting bit of recent news was regarding two Republican senators breaking ranks. Bill Frist announced his support for a measure (HR 810/S 471) that would expand federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. Then Rick Santorum broke over intelligent design. These are not freshmen senators, and these are issues that matter to their most devoted base.
In short, the stage is set to knock the Bush administration completely of it's dwindling base. A strong case can be made for impeachment. If the blogosphere is stating 'I will vote for anyone who will impeach Bush' and the Democrats are stating 'I will impeach Bush if in the majority', that will put some pressure on a weak spot. If the message is consistent, I think it would lead to Republican candidate X being asked if they would impeach Bush... forcing them to defend an unpopular president, or get on board with impeaching Bush.
The Republican party becomes ripe for division by making impeachment an issue. It would disorganize them... think of how the message gets inconsistent when Bushco is under pressure... Rummy says one thing, Condi says something else, etc. I think the same thing would happen party-wide.
The net effect, I think, might just be the actual impeachment of Bush and company. Certainly Democrats are going to do well... and we might get some responsible conservatives who would move to impeach. Certainly there are plenty of conservatives who would like to see an actual conservative in office. Impeaching Bush would allow them to take a stand.
And maybe we get a government that can actually get something realistic done.
