...the streets.
We need to stop demonizing Bush/GOP/the suburbs and instead fight against the factors which make such phenomenon possible.
Why are we disconnected? Why are our lives so busy? Why are we electing facist warmongerers to the nation's highest office? There's two answers as far as I can see:
Ignorance and Tokenizing.
If you've met and truly know the poor/homeless/GLBT/immigrants etc. then how could you hate them or enact legislation minimizing their human status. We need education, dialogue, community, strong neighborhoods, and that those who are outraged act on their outrage to create good.
Paulo Freire gives a good method in Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Che Guevara notes wisely that "at the risk of sounding ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionairy is guided by feelings of love". Acting out of love we can beat hate...and if we can't than not much is worthwhile.
Tokenizing is even harder to put a finger on. It's having one member of a minority identity in an organization and calling it diversity. It's asking an individual what ALL minority members in his/her group think about a certain topic. It's a charity whose leadership doesn't have anyone from the population being served. It's events like a homeless campout that cause the rich to feel like they're making a difference when in reality they're just inconveniencing themselves temporarily.
Ultimately, it's denying the people the power to fix their own problems as they see fit. Instead of tokenizing we should be creating the opportunity for anyone--regardless of the labels slapped on by society--to achieve whatever their talent, motivation and heart drive them to achieve.
