Dear Liberal Nutcases,
and I say that in the warmest way possible, because you're our nuts. By us I mean we who take pride in being the "reality based" crowd and you would be those sometimes maligned as the "tinfoil hat" crowd. I'm glad you're out there, I think you have a lot of good information, a lot of passion, a lot of things that need to be said, and a lot of annoying bad habits.
I think the information and ideas you have would much easier for everyone to deal with if you just changed the delivery a little bit. I mean this in the best possible way. I think we're on the same side. I want us to win. I want us to be effective. So, for a moment, hang the aluminium chapeau on the rabbit ears and tell me what you think of this...
Drop the persecution complex. They or We aren't trying to silence you. It's not a conspiracy or willful ignorance. We just have an aversion to things that sound crazy. It's a common human failing. Also, we try to avoid annoying interactions. At some point some of us may give up and just try to avoid you, but don't take it personally, we should probably be trying harder for engagement and community building.
The primacy your cause is a turn off. Most of us who are at least moderately activist already have a cause. We like it and think it's important. Telling us how wrong we are to choose our causes and not choose yours is insulting. Don't dis our causes and we won't dis yours. Deal?
The world is not stupid for not already seeing your point. "No no no no, you don't get it!" Again, you insult us. Bad form. Please, keep trying though. Maybe at first just a few of us will pick up on the parts relevant to our causes, but make a good name for yourself and you'll get all the fame and glory for having been there since the beginning when the movement comes around to adopt your cause.
DON'T USE ALL CAPS. Good advice in general. It seems to me that there's something about the passionate nature of some activists who tend towards the melodramatic emphasis of all caps. If you are overusing all caps I recommend deep breathing and daily meditation.
finally, Avoid the bullshit/crazy filters. Being around political/activist communities for a little while tuned my personal filter. I'm not sure exactly how to characterize it but there's a definite difference between sane, rational discourse and batshit crazy nonsense. I guess if you're borderline having trouble with this the thing is to practice and accept constructive criticism.
HTH, HAND.
