....Not the tax policy you paraphrase from Rummy.
The ravages from Hurricane Katrina are like no disaster we've ever seen, but not for one second can we forget that it has been made far worse by our own government.  Our own government!  What is the federal government supposed to do if not respond to something on this scale?  But conservatives for years have been firing people up with crap that the government shouldn't spend your money.  Well, I think this disaster has blown up that argument.
Individuals can not respond to this like a coordinated, fully funded, efficient, organized government effort.  I have given money, offered housing.  I am not a doctor.  I do not own a truck, plane or boat.  If I had these things I would be on the road bringing food and water to the victims.  But I am just a social worker in Maine.

I want a tax policy that allows our country to respond to people in need.  I want a tax policy that puts the grown-ups in charge.  I want a tax policy that addresses the inequities and racial disparities in our country.  I want a tax policy that doesn't leave the poor, sick and brown to fend for themselves.  I want a tax policy that funds cities and addresses real known risks to our citizens.
Now is the time to demand this.  The insanity has gone on long enough. Individuals like me and others can not respond like a funded and organized government effort. Now if you'll excuse me, I may have to go and hunt down Grover Norquist and drown HIM in my bath tub.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I truly believe this may be the beginning of a Great Depression-like struggle for the entire country - but even if it's not, this requires an FDR-New Deal type response.  And what they discovered in the 1930's - and truly only succeeded in overcoming with the onset of WWII for us in 1941 - is that rich people won't give up even a small portion of their money for the general good unless they're forced, kicking and screaming - and they cannot be the ones in power when you're trying to get their money.  These fuckers have been gutting the tax code for over a decade now, usually with Democratic assistance, and they're not going to give up just because of a little thing like the biggest disaster ever to hit this country.  If outrage cannot be marshalled, next week the Repugs will take the next steps to eliminate the estate tax permanently, one of the biggest gifts to the wealthy so far, thus further gutting our ability to pay for the years of reconstruction, support and relocation of refugees that we're facing.

If the events of this week are not sufficient to oust these lying, thieving bastards from power in Congress in 2006 and the White House in 2008, nothing could be.  I still don't see, however, where the new FDR is going to emerge from the Democrats.

democrat either.  Although I saw Al Sharpton on Olberman last night talking about the lack of funding for cities.
I want to see our officials start demanding real fairness in the tax code.

        Over and over and over....

The first, a juxtaposition of Grover Norquist saying he wants to drown the Federal Government in a bathtub with images of the drowned city of New Orleans, for one IS without question a direct cause of the other.

The second should be RNC Chair Kenny Mehlman lobbying for the estate tax repeal (and yes, it is called the estate tax, not the death tax) on the very days a unique American civilization of the Big Easy was dying.

May this finally be their Waterloo. May we have a 'New" New Deal at last.
