This is my first diary on Daily Kos. I'm a long-time lurker, with a lot of excuses for not posting: getting laid off and re-settling in the DC area last year, the devastation and sense of hopelessness I felt after the 2004 election.
But now I have something to be fired up about: the devastation of my home town. But it's not hopeless. There's not a lot I can do, at this point, besides give every spare dime I have. One thing I decided to do is re-design my blog, Hell's Mouth Cafe', to focus on the city's recovery. This is a NON-PROFIT EFFORT, done on my own time. Please read on...
I was born & raised in New Orleans. I now live near Washington, DC. But my heart has always been in my home town... and now, more than ever, I empathize with what it's going through.
I feel so helpless. I feel like there's hardly anything I can do. I've given money, have tried to get in touch with the Red Cross to volunteer, to no avail. I hear there will be a Jazz Fest next year, somewhere, and I plan to be there.
One thing I have done is re-design my web blog, to be about the city's recovery. This blog is a totally non-profit effort, done on my own time. It's a way of collecting what I hope is mostly good news, for friends and family, and anyone else who cares about the city, to peruse at their leisure.
This is a modest, amateur effort, and it shows. I'm a writer, but not much of a designer.
Still, I hope you will visit, and offer any suggestions, tips or links you might know of. If you like what you see, spread the word.

Thanks for your time, and for your support of the people and places affected so horribly by Katrina.
