The Society of Environmental Journalists is highlighting yet another disturbing example of the Bush administration's habitual secrecy.
Despite the filing of an FOIA request a week ago, the EPA has thus far refused to release results gathered by "...12 field teams doing initial assessments of the environmental impacts including potential impacts from chemical facilities, oil refineries, and water treatment plants."
The request was filed by Mark Schleifstein,
The Times-Picayune reporter and Pulitzer prize-winner, who co-authored a 2002 5-part front-page series titled "Washing Away," which presciently warned of a disaster like Katrina's effects on New Orleans.
The SEJ followed up with their own letter (PDF).
This is an opportunity for all and sundry to demand explanations from this adminstration. If you'd like to support Mark's request, a word to your congressman might be helpful.
