Just this little bit of info to add. This is my mother's home state, so I know a little about it. On the state level, Mississippi is still Democratic thanks to the "yellow-dog" Democrat days. The state house is controlled by Democrats (House: 74D's to 45R's, Senate: 29D's to 23R's). Also, I believe Haley Barbour is only the 2nd Republican Governor to be elected in Mississippi since Reconstruction. However, these Southern Democrats probably have more in common with the National Republican Party, like some Northeast Republicans have more in common with the National Democratic Party.
