After publicly toying with it for months on a "listening tour", former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman (D)-(1999-2003) announced he will run to reclaim the office he lost to Bob Riley in 2002.
Siegeleman will have to fight an uphill battle to make it to the general election though. Even though he beat a corruption trial, Siegelman has never been able to dispel the notion that his administration was somewhat corrupt. The US Attorney has not given up on nailing him and there is little Siegelman can do to fight the perception of corruption.
Additionally, Siegelman will have to best very popular LG Lucy Baxley in the primary. Baxley has never had to run a high profile, expensive campaign but she is serving her third term in statewide office and is widely popular with both parties. Baxley is not really associated with any particular agendas or issues so it is somewhat possible that she could falter in her first primetime race. If that does happen then Siegelman could benefit, but the cards are stacked against him.
I have a post on Siegelman's entry into the race on my blog...http://alelections.blogspot.com
