I was watching the latest episode of "Lost" when the phone rang. It was someone representing
Lyndon LaRouche, who I had honestly never heard of (I'm young, so I may be out of the loop on this guy...), out of Chicago. Thoughts raced through my mind: How did they know my home phone number, which I NEVER give out? How did they know my name, and town of residence, which I rarely give out? It seemed strange to me.
... I didn't really talk much though. The other guy did all the talking.
The conversation started off normal, as the man on the other end praised the efforts by LaRouche to get Delay indicted that were a huge success. Then he started talking about how this is only the first step, and that there's a long way to go.
Okay, I'm hooked.
Then he moves to Cheney; and how he's the next one to fall and now is the time to strike. Okay, sounds good to me. But how? He didn't really explain much. He talked quite a bit about Cheney and his war machine/insanity and how it's only a matter of time before his downfall. Then, he talked about moving to "that nutcase", Bush. While I agreed with most of what he said, the way he came about saying it wasn't the best. And to be honest, I had no idea who I was listening to. He never really explained much.
He talked for about 15 minutes, by which time I started to block him out because 1.) I was too intruiged by what was happening on Lost, which is an incredibly insightful and full of those crazy mysteries I love so much, and 2.) I was given no opprotunity to speak, rather I was being given a speech for which I could see no forseeable end. Again, I agreed with almost everything this man was telling me; and knew about most of it as well.
For the most part, what he was saying was very plausible... but at some points, he completely lost me. I didn't know what he was talking about. I had no idea who this man was talking on behalf of Lyndon H. LaRauche Jr., who I had also never heard of.
After about 20 minutes, with no end in sight coming from the other end and an unwillingness to just stop him, I did what most Americans would do in this situation: I hung up on him. I feel guilty, since I'm sure he was taking precious time out of his life to try to further the cause, which again I was sympathetic too since it coincides with my beliefs... but at the same time I was watching a show I happen to be (I'll admit it) addicted to and wasn't really preparted for a half-hour speech on something that I didn't need to be convinced of.
So I return to watching Lost... until the phone rings not less than a minute later. I know it's him, but I pick up anyway. "We must have lost the connection", he says. He asks what I think so far and the only thing I can say is "sounds good". He talks a bit more until he finally starts talking TO me and not AT me.
"You're a student, right?"
"Yes."
"So you must be what, 25?"
"No."
"24?"
"No."
"23?"
"No."
"21?"
"No."
"So how old are you?"
"I'll be 19 soon."
So he goes to suggest I should join the LaRouche youth movement, gives me information on the LaRouche PAC and asks for my information to get in contact with me. He knew the town and state I lived in, obviously my phone number, and since he knew I was a student he must have known something about that. He asked for my address; which I politely declined to give over the phone. I gave him my e-mail address and he said he'd be in contact with me.
However, while giving him my e-mail address, I started to feel like something was wrong. Maybe it was paranoia sparked by the mysterious/creepiness of Lost, but there was this strange clicking noise on the phone. Almost like someone was picking up the phone to listen... but I know it wasn't anyone on my end. I think my paranoia just got the best of me but I found this conversation to be weird to begin with... so after him asking for my information and then that, I was just weirded out.
So that ended that conversation. He was a nice man, but was too pushy. If I hadn't already known what he was talking about, I certainly would have been completely lost as to what he was trying to accomplish. In fact, I still don't know.
The LaRouche PAC website has some good information on what he's been doing, and now that I think about it he was saying there was a HUGE movement in Congress on our side, that was getting larger by the day, to stop this administration. He mentioned impeachment and otherwise but I honestly wasn't paying much attention at that point, which now I regret.
