Why aren't more Americans enraged by this Christian agenda infiltrating our government? Have so many of us forgotten our own history? I even hear Republicans stating that the people who founded this country did so to flee religious persecution, and those same people go on to commit the same kinds of persecution those original colonists fled. Why don't we remember history?
The "religious persecution" most people reference was a direct result of the King of England and the Church of England working hand-in-hand with each other. The Puritans who came over here wanted to practice a MORE fundmental version of their faith than those in power (who had outlawed Shakespeare's plays, among other conservative acts). Their government was trying to tell them how to practice their religion, and they wanted none of it. So, they came over here to SEPARATE their CHURCH from the STATE government.
The Founding Fathers wholeheartedly agreed with this idea and made sure that the Separation of Church and State would be a fundamental (ahem) aspect of this new country, "America." So, now that we see God being written into acts of Congress, where is the moral outrage? Where are the students of history quoting Thomas Jefferson and George Washington in order to remind people of what makes our country so great? All we have to do is look to the Middle East, and we can see what results when the religious conservatives decide to run the country based their faith. Is there that much difference between snake handling and burkas?
Apparently, we are a nation of TV-watching, fast-food-eating LUNKHEADS whose idea of civic duty is voting down the next school levy so our taxes don't go up. It disgusts me. The (few and far between) voices of outrage are ignored like the buzzing of a cricket on a warm summer night. The decreasing minority of people like me, who strive for independent thought and reasoned discourse, are, if I am any kind of example, giving up on changing anything and concentrating on carving out a little protected niche for themselves and their families.
I weep for my daughter (who's less than 1 year old). I despair for her future. What kind of country will she come of age in? Will she be able to be anything she wants, as is my wish? Will she become disillusioned at an early age and wind up in her 30's, miserable and saddled with a life she never wanted, let alone chose? How can I ensure her future when I can barely make ends meet now? If she weren't in my life, I probably wouldn't be here. Humans are, as Jonathan Swift described them, "the most despicable race of odious little vermin Nature ever suffered to crawl on the face of the earth."
