Gonzales is not a good witness. Unless it's Hatch spoon-feeding him softballs, he's getting shot down on every point. Leahy did a particularly effective job of attacking the AUMF argument.
Kennedy's up.
Update [2006-2-6 11:7:24 by georgia10]:: 10 minute break. Kennedy's line of questioning had some excellent points in it, but he jumbled them all together. He would been much more effective cutting his questions down into bite-size pieces like Leahy did than incorporating 10 questions into 1.
UPDATE:Some highlights from AG's testimony so far:
- He was asked by Leahy to point out what language specifically gives the President the authority to wiretap American citizens. Gonzales said "nowhere specifically."
- Answering Kennedy's question of why they didn't consult with Congress: "The short answer is, we didn't think we needed to. "
- Leahy asked Gonzales to pin down when the program was authorized, before or after the Patriot Act? Gonzales said he didn't remember. Leahy will bring this up again.
