By all means,
let's celebrate with Armando: it's been a rare couple of hours here, as we watch the plutocratic and ideological wings of the Republican party battle it out. It's immensely satisfying to see -- finally -- did they not notice? -- the right complaining about Bush's cronyism.
Amusing indeed. While sites like redstate refused to condemn the appointment of Michael Brown, they seem quite up in arms that the person they hope to overturn Roe does not come with high enough recommendations. I suppose that's because, for the right, a white fetus is worth more than a black life.
Put that aside, and focus on what's happening. Put aside, even, the fact that Miers stands an excellent chance at becoming a member of the Supreme Court because of more than six years of Democratic incompetence and failure.
Right now, a woman without a paper trail will be nominated. The only -- and I mean only -- reason given for her appointment by the President is her religion. Wake up! It's amusing to watch the right fight, but they'll patch up their differences -- the Republican big business leaders are the only people with the stomach to (lie) and promise an end to abortion for their dupes. In the meantime, remember what they're fighting about: Bush nominated someone who almost certaintly is staunchly pro-life; the right is angry, because it wants a guarantee.
What has our country come to? I didn't care about Roberts, but I believe the Democrats must stand up and fight this confirmation. What has happened to the secular state?
I'm not saying Miers is going to be a super-Scalia. In fact, I doubt it. I'm demanding that our party stand up for a secular court system, a system in which a judge's religion should never be grounds — let alone the sole grounds — for appointment.
