Great work continuing the focus on the CIA leak and SCOTUS, but let's not forget about the serious issues at DOD. I believe we can walk, chew gum and rub our tummies at the same time. Senator Levin
announced today that he will be offering an amendment to establish an independent commission on the treatment of detainees:
"We are calling for an Independent Commission on the Treatment of Detainees because the Defense Department has shown that it is not capable of investigating itself," said Levin. "The most serious scandal in recent military history needs an objective investigation."
This is about much more then the rights of the individual detainees. This is about the safety of our troops, the credibility of our military and our ability to succeed in creating stability in Iraq. This amendment is obviously going to be an uphill battle. Finding enough, if any, republicans to support this will be challenging, but we must be ready to call them on it if they don't or better yet, pressure them to support it before it comes for a vote. After all, I thought republicans were strong on defense? Or is that only dems?
