Well, sometimes you have to point out what is going right in the world. Sometimes companies do the right thing and I believe google is doing alot of good things not only for themselves but for the world.
Google does not leave a large footprint on the earth it doesn't have sweat shops or strip mining so in reality they have less need for corporate good will and charity then a petroleum company or clothing company. Yet they seem to do more.
The BBC is reporting that Google has set up a 1 billion dollar charity fund (1% of the value of the company)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4333942.stm
"Google's vice-president of operations and advertising Sheryl Sandberg - who is in charge of Google.org - said the company wanted to provide sustainable solutions to the problems of poverty, energy and the environment. "
more on the flip side
What makes this important is that this isn't a donation to get a tax break this is large arm of a company totally devoted to doing good for the world. It is what company's should do rather then what they do and I wanted to appuald google for doing this.
SO make google your homepage and when you look at the ads on google remember that they are helping pay for one of the largest philanthropic endeavours in the world.
Here are 3 of the first projects to receive funding:
The Acumen Fund, which will receive $5m to fund anti-poverty and healthcare schemes in the developing world
A research project in Kenya run by economists from Harvard University and the University of California, which will get $400,000 for efforts to improve rural water quality
US-based organisation Technoserve will get $500,000 for a competition to find and fund business start-ups in Ghana.
Also keep in mind Google also allows non profits to advertise for free quite a bit.
