With all the hubbub about Harriet Miers's nomination, it is time that a truly secular liberal speak out against her. As such, I call for the
filibuster of the nomination.
There are two statements made by Sarah Taylor and James Dobson, respectively, involved with this story that have sent a resounding alert in my mind.
Sarah Taylor, a White House policy director, made the following statement in an October 6 conference call with RNC Chair Ken Mehlman and conservative religious leaders
And I know we understand how important this is, that alot of people for long time have worked hard on behalf of these issues and she's somebody who is honest, who has incredible character, and when she says to people that she's going to behave in a certain way she always does it. And I have enormous confidence in her and that she will be an incredible, and, justice somebody who will not only make decisions based on what's in the Constitution, but makes decisions that, she believes strongly in.
Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, made the following statement in the October 12 edition of his radio show.
What did Karl Rove say to me that I knew on Monday that I couldn't reveal? Well, it's what we all know now, that Harriet Miers is an Evangelical Christian, that she is from a very conservative church, which is almost universally pro-life, that she had taken on the American Bar Association on the issue of abortion and fought for a policy that would not be supportive of abortion, that she had been a member of the Texas Right to Life. In other words, there is a characterization of her that was given to me before the President had actually made this decision. I could not talk about that on Monday. I couldn't talk about it on Tuesday. In fact, Brit Hume said, "What church does she go to?"
Harriet Miers would be an excellent candidate for the Sanhedrin, but Bush's "religious test" cannot be tolerated as a standard for the Supreme Court. As such, I strongly encourage all Democratic Senators (including Byrd & Rockefeller) to vote NO on a motion of cloture for the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court of the United States.
